What is stress?  And 3 Ways to tame it.

What is stress?

Children crying, traffic, being late, finances, email, family…

Nope.  These are just a few examples of this beautiful thing called LIFE.

STRESS is how you react to LIFE.

On any given day we have so many instances of LIFE and we have the luxury to choose how we handle them.

According to Womenshealth.gov, “Stress is a reaction to a change or a challenge. In the short term, stress can be helpful. It makes you more alert and gives you energy to get things done. But long-term stress can lead to serious health problems. Women are more likely than men to report symptoms of stress, including headaches and upset stomach. Women are also more likely to have mental health conditions that are made worse by stress, such as depression or anxiety.

How do you react to life’s changes and challenges?  Do you fly off the handle?  Do you yell? Do you start shaking? Do you let one bad instance affect all the others that follow?

Yesterday while sitting in the waiting room at my doctor’s office for my annual check-up, I diligently answered questions on a generic photocopy form.  The section that asked about any changes in my life gave me a moment of pause.  “Why does the doctor want to know about changes in my life?  I’m just here to get my blood work results, feel around for lumps in my boobs and hopefully skip the vaginal exam!”  But wait, stress is ‘a reaction to change or challenges’.  This doctor wants to know what is going on in my life so they can assess my stress.  Why?  Because stress is NOT COOL.  It causes all sorts of personal and health problems.  Anxiety, sleeplessness, pain, etc. all of which can lead to far more serious diseases and emotional, relationship and life issues.

So how can we manage it?

Here are three easy tips to put stress in perspective and send it packing.


Do this daily.  This isn’t about being the skinniest milf on the block.  Working out releases endorphins (the feel good stuff) and it refocuses your mind to what’s in the here and now (like this really f-ing hard workout).  So this is your excuse to buy that Peloton you have been dreaming about.  Trust us.  It’s awesome. Life changing. Worth every penny.  You’ll jump off that bike with a glistening brow, a great song stuck in your head and a renewed vigor for the day


This is a tough one when you’re having a terrible day.  I believe it was Oprah that I heard this awesome advice from…When you’re having one of those days, please just smile.  What I mean by this is literally PLASTER a smile on your face (even if it is fake and ugly) and go on with your bad self.  Imagine yourself driving down the road completely pissed off that your daughter threw a knock down drag out fight at preschool drop off…and you were supposed to be somewhere 10 minutes ago.  You’re pissed, you’re sad about how you handled the situation and you’re freaking out about how late you are.  Oh girl plaster that smile on.  And when you get to the stoplight, turn your head, and show those pearly whites to the person next to you.  You will die. It’s hilarious.  Then do it again to the next person.  Keep smiling when you walk into the meeting.  It works.  So next time you find yourself rolling deep in the negative…just smile!
