What Is the Endocannabinoid System? -The Science Behind CBD

Up until recently, cannabis products were considered somewhat taboo. However, thanks to advances in science, specifically within the medical field, most of this mentality has been eradicated. Today, more and more people are turning to CBD to treat mental and bodily health issues.

However, the medicinal benefits of cannabis have been far from unknown to us even prior to this point in time. Even though we are just now beginning to understand the science, humans have always had a pretty good understanding that cannabis has special healing properties. Around the world, different cultures and groups of people have been using it to treat bodily ailments for quite some time.

During ancient times, cannabis fiber, or hemp, was used to create basic necessities like clothes, paper, and rope. Later on, people discovered its medicinal benefits and it used it to treat menstrual fatigue, rheumatism, malaria, and other bodily illnesses. Soon thereafter, people began to discover its mental health benefits and how the plant could bring clarity to the mind and aid in self reflection.

But only recently have we begun to understand how this “miracle plant” actually works. This is due in partly thanks to recent research conducted around CBD, a non psychoactive compound found within the cannabis plant. It turns out that CBD helps to balance something called the endocannabinoid system, an important biological system that exists within the human body and brain.

What Is the Endocannabinoid System?

The endocannabinoid system is a biological system within our bodies that helps us maintain optimal health. Its basic role is to help the various systems of the body maintain homeostasis, a state of equilibrium in which bodily systems function in an optimal manner.

The endocannabinoid system consists of three major components: endocannabinoid receptors, cannabinoids, and metabolic enzymes. All three can be found all throughout the human body.

Endocannabinoid receptors are activated by by cannabinoids and are able to sense changes within the body. When things fall out of balance, they send a signal to the appropriate system and stimulate changes in cellular function so that the body can return to homeostasis. Endocannabinoids regulate the immune system, muscular system, and central nervous system.

How CBD Interacts with the Endocannabinoid System

Cannabidiol is a compound that is derived from the cannabis plant. It interacts with our body’s endocannabinoid system in a way that’s very similar to the way our naturally occurring endocannabinoids do. CBD stimulates endocannabinoid receptors, which then send chemical signals that help bring the body to homeostasis.

The two main receptors that CBD interacts with are called CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors regulate the body’s central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. CB2 receptors are found primarily on white blood cells, and help regulate the body’s immune system.

When we give our bodies CBD, we are boosting a response in our endocannabinoid system. Whatever functions are out of place are drawn back to homeostasis. In this way, CBD helps to reduce anxiety, inflammation, pain, nausea, sleep cycle issues, and high blood pressure.

In addition, CBD also interacts with other receptors located within the body. This includes other receptors that are known for regulating body temperature, pain, inflammation, and mood.

CBD can be used to promote our bodily health in so many ways. For this reason, many people believe that it is a miracle drug. While there is still much to be learned about CBD, one thing is for certain. It promotes the functioning of one of the most important biological systems within our bodies.

And for the most part, it’s very well tolerated and produces almost no negative side effects. Today, the majority of the medical and scientific community consider it to be safe.
